The Eclipse

 -Jonathan Hedlund &

Andrea Meza

Just yesterday stretching from Madras, Oregon to Columbia, and South Carolina celestial onlookers saw a total Solar Eclipse. Here in Santa Maria and throughout California we saw what they call a partial eclipse. Although this eclipse was the last one in over 100 years, you can expect the next one to take place in 2024.

“I personally wouldn’t travel somewhere else, but I understand why some people did. I thought it was going to get super dark. Mr. Magni gave us these special glasses to see the eclipse. I think it’s weird, because I expect something like the eclipse to happen more often than it actually does.” –Sarahbella Segura (10)

“I didn’t expect to see the total solar eclipse because of the clouds from this morning, but I expected more coverage from when the sun did come out later in the day. I saw a little bit of it before my fifth period, but not a lot of the coverage. I would’ve liked to see the total eclipse in Oregon, because that’s where the better view was.”

–Joseph Cross (11)

“I think it’s a unique experience for people to see. If you get the chance to see it, it can make you think about our place in the universe and how small we are in the world.” –Ms. Maldonado (Spanish teacher)

At break it was really cloudy and that was the time it was supposed to happen. My friends and I were looking through these special glasses and you could see the eclipse shape. It was a bright orange red color. Just looking at the sun is just bright on its own.” –Lylah Sherrod (12)

“I only saw half of it. I was expecting it to be darker, but it was bright outside. I think it sucks that I’m going to have to wait till 2024 to see the next eclipse happen.” –Rogelio Rodriguez (9)

On Friday night our Junior Varsity football team played a scrimmage against Bishop Diego.  "Our team performance was good. We started off a little rough, we haven't faced another team for the whole season. We've been kind of been practicing against our selves so it was good. They threw a lot at us but I thought our kids reacted pretty well towards the end. Yes, I do believe we are ready for this upcoming season. They’ve been practicing really hard. We don’t play against Nipomo, so we get an extra week off to prepare for San Luis, we're definitely ready." -Coach Steven Martinez

Junior Varsity Football Scrimmage

-Daniel Rodriguez

“I believe that our team is definitely ready for this season. Just got to fix some little things but I'm pretty sure we'll be ready for San Luis Obispo." -Coach Mike Bloodworth

“I’m pretty prepared for the season and I think my team is too.  We had butterflies at first but at halftime we brought it in, played our hardest, and gave it our all "

-Matthew Perez

"They say you practice how you play, we obviously need to pick it up on practice. But there is always room for improvement. And get ready for the season." -Danny Martinez (10)

“We started out rough but we picked it up more towards the second half… putting in more work.” -Gabriel Romero (11)

Netflix Originals Review

-Charlotte Ionata

The Fundamentals of Caring staring Selena Gomez, Paul Rudd, and Craig Roberts. This movie is about a boy who is in a wheelchair because of muscle dystrophy, Trevor, and his caretaker Ben. Trevor sits at home all day and Ben, who just learned how to be a caretaker, wants to take him on a road trip. They eventually pick up a hitch hiker and go on an adventure.

The Fundamentals of Caring is full of dark humor which makes anyone laugh at the worst jokes imaginable. The movie is a romcom that starts off as a comedy and eventually becomes romantic, it has a few very serious scenes but they are broken up throughout the movie and normally followed by a joke. The movie is based on Trevor, but also follows some of Ben's past. I think they needed to explain Ben's past in a little more detail to fully comprehend why he is doing what he is doing. All the actors especially Craig Roberts (Trevor), did an amazing job in portraying their characters. The movie has a lot of very intense moments, because Trevor likes to play jokes and Ben enjoys taking revenge. There is a fair amount of cussing in the movie that takes away from the movie. However, The Fundamentals of Caring makes you smile through the whole movie. There are so many funny parts to the movie and also parts that bring you back to the reality of Trevor’s condition and how he lives on a day to day basis. Overall, this is a very humorous movie that I think everyone who doesn’t mind cussing would like, because the movie’s humor is very out of the norm for comedy movies. I give it a solid 8 out of 10.
