Netflix Originals Review Last Chance U

-Charlotte Ionata

Last Chance U is a yearly documentary that follows the lives of East Mississippi Community College football players. Most of the football players are in Mississippi because they didn’t make grades, failed a drug test, or argued with their coach and quite. East Mississippi either takes in Division 1 athletes or makes Division 1 athletes. Last Chance U follows the struggles of being a student-athlete especially when a lot of the athletes struggle in school their whole life.

Last Chance U Season 1 is a great documentary that follows the everyday life of college football players. The documentary goes in depth with graduating seniors who have the potential to go to a Division 1 college. The whole series is full of suspense between making grades to graduate and winning the national championship for the 5th time in a row. The cinematography is amazing. They catch all of the players and coaches’ feelings on and off the field. The crew did an amazing job at making every single game feel like it was a do or die situation. The documentary not only followed the athletes but the coaches and counselors and all of their emotions towards how they are feeling before every game. I thought they did a great job at showing the behind the scenes of being a student-athlete. They showed how hard the counselor works just to make sure everybody graduates on time with the proper grades to get in the school they want to do too.  There is a lot of cussing from both the athletes and coaches because football is a physical sport and they all get angry during every game because it’s impossible to have a perfect game. They did a good job at showing what player was doing during an actual game by putting the sports commentator recording over the game which helped add suspense. During the last couple of games, the head coach became very disgruntled because he thought this group of boys was going to be the best he ever coached and he said things that was very disrespectful to all the players. I can’t imagine what they cut out because what they left in made the head coach look horrible.  Over all the documentary was very inspiring it showed what every athlete has to overcome mentally and physically. I would give Last Chance U a 9 out of 10 because it was an amazing documentary that showed the real life of coaches and athletes but there was a lot of cussing and the filming was done in the same three places.

“If I was able to play a sport for any college it would be volleyball for UCSD. UCSD has been my dream school for a while now. To be able to play the sport I love would be a dream come true as well. At UCSD I would want to pursue a medical career and play a D1 sport.” –Val Ramos (11)

“I would want to go to Berkeley and play water polo because it is one of the most physically challenging sports ever. Being in college and playing water polo would mean that I was really in shape and athletic.” -Candice Morales (12)

If you could play any sport for any college what college would it be and why?

“I would play basketball at [University of] Kentucky. Kentucky is one of the best basketball schools in the country and I love to play basketball.” -Mark Cabeliza (9)

“I would want to play soccer either at San Diego or Fullerton because they both have great soccer programs. It's been a goal for me to play soccer in college since I was very small.” –Josue Chavez (11)

“If I was able to play a sport for any college it would be volleyball at UCLA. I’ve always seen UCLA a school that most people admire and it would be a dream if I could play volleyball for them. At UCLA I would pursue  a medical career since I want to become a pediatrician while playing volleyball.” –Brigitte Vargas (11)

Pineapple on Pizza: Pure or Putrid?

In today’s pizza world, many have different opinions on whether or not pineapple does belong on pizza. To some the idea is super gross and makes them have a disgusted taste in their mouth. Personally, I think pineapple does belong on pizza! It makes pizza taste just a tad bit better; where do you stand?

“It’s not my favorite, and definitely not a choice for me. It’s just not something you put on pizza!” –Mrs.Pehle

"Yes! Definitely pineapple does belong on pizza because pineapple is sweet and makes the pizzas sweet and it just goes together!" –Marc Cabeliza (9)

“I love pineapple on pizza! Pizza and pineapple and pizza because when you mix those two together you have on Godly pizza.”

–Bijan Ladan (11)

“Pineapple on pizza makes me livid!  Pineapple on pizza is like eating peaches and cottage cheese! It just doesn’t go [and] it’s disgusting!” – Ahsley Gutierrez (11)

"I honestly don't like pineapple in general. In my opinion I don't think pineapple on pizza is a good combination. I just like cheese and pepperoni pizza" -Elizabeth Morales (12)

“Okay, I believe it does go on pizza because it makes the pizza taste way better and gives it a sweet taste that I love! Pineapple makes everything better!” –Gabriel Dominguez (9)
